Governor Patrick Morrisey today unveiled the comprehensive "Grow West Virginia" economic initiative, a bold plan designed to spur job creation and dramatically increase workforce participation across the Mountain State.
The initiative centers on four key pillars: cutting taxes and fees, expanding career and vocational-technical education, attracting new businesses, and streamlining regulations and permits to reduce red tape for development.
"Grow West Virginia is about unleashing the potential that has always existed in our state," Governor Morrisey announced. "We're removing barriers, creating opportunities, and building an economy that works for all West Virginians."
As a first concrete step, the Governor announced a $50 million Jobs Initiative fund to support immediate job creation efforts. This includes a $400,000 investment to help a Moorefield manufacturer expand its operations and add 50 new jobs to the local economy.
The plan emphasizes practical workforce development, with a special focus on expanding career and vocational-technical education programs. By aligning education with industry needs, the initiative aims to create clear pathways from classroom to career for West Virginia's students.
"We're not just talking about change – we're delivering it," Morrisey said. "This initiative will transform West Virginia into a magnet for businesses and a land of opportunity for our workers."
The streamlining of regulations and permits represents a significant shift in how the state approaches economic development. A new one-stop permitting system will reduce wait times and bureaucratic delays that have historically deterred business investment.
Local business leaders have praised the initiative, noting that the combination of tax relief, workforce development, and regulatory reform addresses their most pressing concerns. The Governor's office projects the initiative will create thousands of new jobs over the next five years while significantly increasing the state's workforce participation rate.
