Governor Patrick Morrisey announced that West Virginia residents can now add their state-issued driver's licenses and IDs to Apple Wallet. This technology enables ID verification at over 250 TSA checkpoints nationwide and supports secure, contactless identity presentation on iPhones and Apple Watches.
West Virginia has become the 12th state to adopt digital ID technology through Apple Wallet. Residents can add their driver's license or state ID by selecting the + button in Apple Wallet and following on-screen instructions.
The digital IDs work at more than 250 TSA checkpoints across U.S. airports, including Charleston Yeager and Huntington Tri-State. The state is collaborating with vendors to expand usage at additional retailers and locations.
For in-person use, users double-click the side button, select their ID, and hold their device near a reader. Information displays only after Face or Touch ID authorization, without requiring device handover.
Security features include encryption on the user's device, ISO 18013-5 mDL standard compliance, and limited data sharing. "Apple and the state-issuing authority do not know when or to whom a user presents their driver's license or state ID," according to the announcement.
Residents are advised to carry physical copies, as digital versions aren't universally accepted.
