Governor Patrick Morrisey announced that the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection and U.S. EPA Region 3 would begin removing hazardous materials from the former Belchers Cleaners site in Oceana.
A state inspection found the abandoned building in serious disrepair, with unsecured entryways and open or leaking containers of dry-cleaning solvents and other waste. The materials included tetrachloroethylene, also known as perchloroethylene or perc.
WVDEP issued an enforcement order and coordinated a federal removal action. Officials said there was no immediate danger to neighboring residents or businesses, but acting promptly would reduce the risk from severe weather, further deterioration, or additional releases.
