Governor Patrick Morrisey announced that West Virginia will extend its financial support to keep national parks operational during the federal shutdown. The state's donation agreement, originally set for 14 days at approximately $7,000 daily, will now continue through Bridge Day this Saturday and potentially through the end of October.

During a Capitol briefing, Governor Morrisey explained that West Virginia began paying to operate national parks early in October as the federal shutdown continued. The initial agreement was designed to last two weeks, but with no end to the shutdown in sight, the governor committed to extending the arrangement.

"I fully intend to extend that agreement and Bridge Day will go on as planned," Morrisey stated, referencing the major tourism event attracting thousands of spectators annually.

The extended support covers Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and New River Gorge National River. According to the Governor's Office, the original 14-day cost totaled $97,986.56, with Harpers Ferry accounting for $66,508.96 and New River Gorge for $31,477.60.

Morrisey characterized the investment as worthwhile given the economic impact on regional small businesses and communities. "When they presented to me $7,000 a day, I thought that was a really good deal," he noted.

The parks normally receive over 200,000 visitors monthly in October. Without state funding during a shutdown, visitor centers would close, maintenance would pause, and services would halt.

This decision reflects the governor's understanding that the relatively modest daily investment generates significant economic returns for West Virginia communities that depend on tourism revenue. The move also demonstrates the state's willingness to step in when federal dysfunction threatens local economies.
